# Vermont radon test kits: prices and where to get them

The Vermont Department of Health Laboratory sells its recommended long-term radon test kit for $25. Its short-term kit is $50, and its medium-term and radon in water kits are $25 each.[^1]

## Most homes: order the $25 long-term kit

Order the Health Department Lab’s long-term kit for $25[^1] and leave it in place for 3 to 12 months, ideally including a heating season.[^2]

**Want to see levels day to day?** A digital monitor measures and records radon continuously while it has power.[^3] Use it alongside the lab test, not instead of it: CRCPD says to check a consumer monitor’s results with an approved test.[^4]

## How to order

- **Online:** the [Lab’s radon webstore](https://vdh.webapps.aidcvt.com/water_supplies/radon).[^1]
- **By phone:** 802-338-4736 or 800-660-9997 (toll-free in Vermont).[^2] For a radon in water kit, the Health Department’s testing fact sheet lists 802-338-4724.[^5]
- **Other sellers:** private labs and building supply stores sell short-term radon test kits.[^2] For water, you can use another certified drinking water lab.[^6][^7]

## Which kit to choose

- **Long term, for most homes.** The Health Department recommends testing for 3 to 12 months, ideally including a heating season, because radon levels can change daily, weekly and seasonally.[^2]
- **Short term, for a quick answer.** For a real estate transaction or another reason you need results fast, the Health Department says to use two short-term kits placed side by side.[^5]
- **Medium term.** This kit runs 1 to 3 months.[^1] The EPA counts tests of 90 days or less as short-term and tests of more than 90 days as long-term.[^8]
- **Water.** If you’re on a private well or spring, see [Radon in well water](https://vermontradon.com/well-water/). The Health Department says to know your air result too.[^6]

**Heating season:** a long-term test started in the fall can run through a Vermont winter. The Health Department recommends testing for 3 to 12 months, ideally including a heating season, because radon levels change daily, weekly and seasonally.[^2]

## Where to put the kit

*Diagram: see the HTML page at https://vermontradon.com/radon-test-kits-vermont/*

**Where to put a test kit.** The EPA says to test in the lowest level of the home that could be used regularly, finished or not, and to place the device at least 20 inches above the floor, where it won’t be disturbed, away from drafts, high heat, high humidity and exterior walls. Don’t test in a closet, stairway, hallway or crawl space, or in an enclosed area with high humidity or fast-moving air, such as a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room or furnace room.[^3] Always follow the instructions that come with your kit. More setup tips, such as keeping windows closed for short-term tests, are on [How to test your home](https://vermontradon.com/how-to-test/).

## Free kits

You may come across news stories or town notices saying Vermont gives radon test kits away. As of October 17, 2026, the Lab’s webstore lists a price for every kit, from $25 to $50.[^1] The free kits on the Health Department’s radon page are for its study on radon in water, for wells and springs, and only a limited number of tests are available.[^2][^9] Local outreach with community partners, mostly town clerks and town offices, has also offered free radon test kits.[^10] To ask what’s available near you, call the Radon Program at 802-863-7220 or 800-439-8550 (toll-free in Vermont).[^2]

## Lab kits or a digital monitor

A digital monitor is a different kind of device: it measures and records radon continuously while it has power.[^3] The Lab’s long-term kit is still the test the Health Department recommends for knowing your home’s typical level.[^1] For the full comparison, see [Digital radon monitors vs. state lab test kits](https://vermontradon.com/radon-monitors-vs-test-kits/).

## Our pick, and why

**Start with the state lab’s long-term kit.** To learn your home’s typical level, the Health Department recommends a test of 3 to 12 months, ideally including a heating season,[^2] and its Lab lists the $25 long-term kit as the recommended test.[^1]

A consumer digital monitor is for something else: it measures and records radon continuously while it has power, so you can watch levels change.[^3] CRCPD says consumer monitors should never be used in real estate transactions, are not for mitigation decisions, and should have their results checked with an approved test.[^4]
